JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech I Year ENGINEERING PHYSICS - I Previous Question Paper (May/June - 2019 - R16)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks.
PART - A
Define temporal and spatial coherence.
Answer
Temporal coherence refers to the correlation of the phase of a wave at a single point in space at different times, related to the monochromaticity of the source. Spatial coherence refers to the correlation of the phase of a wave at different points in space at the same time, related to the finite size of the source.
Explain the significance of beam splitter in Newton’s rings experiment.
Answer
The beam splitter is placed at an angle of 45° to the incident light beam. Its function is to reflect a portion of the incident monochromatic light downward onto the air film formed between the convex lens and the glass plate. It also allows the reflected light from the air film to pass through it toward the microscope, enabling the observation of interference fringes.
