a

Convert the given decimal number to binary format: 236

2 marks

Answer

To convert 236 to binary, divide by 2 repeatedly and record the remainders: 236/2 = 118 (rem 0), 118/2 = 59 (rem 0), 59/2 = 29 (rem 1), 29/2 = 14 (rem 1), 14/2 = 7 (rem 0), 7/2 = 3 (rem 1), 3/2 = 1 (rem 1), 1/2 = 0 (rem 1). Reading remainders from bottom to top, 236 in binary is 11101100.

b

Give an example for number system conversion from hexadecimal to decimal number system.

3 marks

Answer

To convert hexadecimal 2A to decimal: (2 × 161) + (10 × 160) = 32 + 10 = 42. Thus, 2A16 = 4210.
