PART - A

1a

Is the function defined by f(x) = {0, x < 2; 1/18(2x+3), 2 ≤ x ≤ 4; 0, x > 4} a probability density function?

2 marks

Answer

To be a valid probability density function (PDF), a function must satisfy two conditions: f(x) ≥ 0 for all x, and the integral of f(x) over its entire domain must equal 1.

1. Non-negativity: For 2 ≤ x ≤ 4, 1/18(2x+3) is clearly positive.

2. Normalization: We calculate the integral over the interval [2, 4]:

∫[2 to 4] (1/18)(2x + 3) dx = (1/18) [x² + 3x] from 2 to 4
= (1/18) [(16 + 12) - (4 + 6)] = (1/18) [28 - 10] = 18/18 = 1

Since both conditions are satisfied, the function is a valid probability density function.

1b

Calculate the expectation and variance of X, if the probability distribution of the random variable X is given by X: -1, 0, 1, 2, 3; f: 0.3, 0.1, 0.1, 0.3, 0.2

3 marks

Answer

The expectation E(X) is calculated as the sum of x multiplied by its corresponding probability f(x):

E(X) = (-1)(0.3) + (0)(0.1) + (1)(0.1) + (2)(0.3) + (3)(0.2) = -0.3 + 0 + 0.1 + 0.6 + 0.6 = 1.0

To calculate the variance V(X), we first find E(X2):

E(X2) = (-1)2(0.3) + (0)2(0.1) + (1)2(0.1) + (2)2(0.3) + (3)2(0.2) = 0.3 + 0 + 0.1 + 1.2 + 1.8 = 3.4

The variance is then given by V(X) = E(X2) - [E(X)]2:

V(X) = 3.4 - (1.0)2 = 3.4 - 1.0 = 2.4
