Answer PaperPaper Code: 124CRMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B.
ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions.
iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1a

Define a Bit rate.

2 marks

Answer

Bit rate is defined as the number of bits transmitted per second over a digital communication channel. It is measured in bits per second (bps) and represents the speed at which data is transferred.

1b

Distinguish between data rate and signal rate.

3 marks

Answer

Data rate, also known as the bit rate, is the number of data elements (bits) sent in one second, measured in bits per second (bps). It defines the speed at which information is transmitted.

Signal rate, also known as the pulse rate, baud rate, or modulation rate, is the number of signal elements sent in one second, measured in baud. It defines the number of changes in the physical signal per second.

The relationship between the two is given by the formula:

S = (N × 1) / r

Where S is the signal rate, N is the data rate, and r is the number of data elements carried by each signal element. While the data rate is concerned with the information itself, the signal rate is concerned with the physical transmission medium's capacity to handle changes.
