Explain pulse code modulation. What are the different types of noises possible in converting analog signal into digital signal?

15 marks

Answer

Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) is a method used to digitally represent sampled analog signals. The process involves three primary stages: sampling, quantizing, and encoding. First, the analog signal is sampled at regular time intervals, typically at or above the Nyquist rate (twice the highest frequency component) to ensure signal reconstruction. Second, each sample is quantized, meaning its continuous amplitude value is mapped to the nearest level from a predefined set of discrete values. Third, these quantized values are converted into a binary code (encoding) for digital transmission.

Converting an analog signal into a digital signal introduces several types of noise and distortion:

  • Quantization Noise: This is the most significant error, arising from the difference between the actual analog sample value and the nearest discrete quantization level. It appears as a rounding error and is often modeled as additive white noise.
  • Quantization Distortion: If the signal amplitude exceeds the range of the quantizer, clipping occurs, leading to severe signal distortion.
  • Sampling Jitter: This occurs when the sampling clock is not perfectly periodic. Variations in the timing of samples lead to errors in the reconstructed signal, particularly at high frequencies.
  • Aliasing Noise: If the input analog signal is not band-limited by a low-pass filter before sampling, frequency components above half the sampling rate (Nyquist frequency) will fold back into the baseband, creating irreversible interference.
  • Aperture Effect: This occurs because the sample-and-hold circuit takes a finite amount of time to capture the sample, effectively acting as a low-pass filter that attenuates higher frequency components.

Derive equation for channel capacity.

Answer

The Shannon-Hartley Theorem defines the maximum theoretical data rate (channel capacity) of a noisy communication channel. For a channel with bandwidth B (in Hz) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the capacity C (in bits per second) is given by:

C = B log₂(1 + S/N)

To derive this, consider the information capacity I of a signal, which is related to entropy. For a signal with power S and additive white Gaussian noise with power N, the total power of the received signal is S + N. The number of distinguishable signal levels M is determined by the ratio of the total received power to the noise power:

M = √( (S + N) / N ) = √(1 + S/N)

Using the Hartley law, where C = 2B log₂(M), substituting M gives:

C = 2B log₂(√(1 + S/N)) = 2B * (1/2) * log₂(1 + S/N) = B log₂(1 + S/N)

This equation represents the fundamental upper limit on the rate at which information can be transmitted over a communication channel with a specified bandwidth and noise level.

A message source produced 6 symbols A, B, C, D, E and F with probabilities P(A)=1/2, P(B)=1/4, P(C)=1/32, P(D)=1/8, P(E)=1/16 and P(F)=1/32. Derive a suitable coding Scheme to improve coding efficiency.
