B.Tech | III | III-I | R16 | January/February - 2023

Answer PaperPaper Code: 135CEMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1a

Write down fire demand along with equation for calculation.

2 marks

Answer

Fire demand refers to the quantity of water required for firefighting purposes in a city or town, calculated based on the population to ensure sufficient pressure and volume during emergencies. The most commonly used empirical formula for calculating fire demand in India is Kuichling's formula:

Q = 3182 √P

where Q is the amount of water required in liters per minute and P is the population of the city in thousands.

1b

Write down any three drinking water standards.

3 marks

Answer

Drinking water quality standards are established to ensure safety for human consumption. Three key parameters and their permissible limits as per IS 10500:2012 are:

  1. pH Value: The acceptable limit is between 6.5 and 8.5. Water outside this range can cause corrosion in distribution pipes or indicate potential contamination.
  2. Total Dissolved Solids (TDS): The desirable limit is 500 mg/L, with a maximum permissible limit of 2000 mg/L in the absence of an alternative source. High TDS affects the taste and can cause gastrointestinal irritation.
  3. Fluoride: The acceptable limit is 1.0 mg/L, with a maximum permissible limit of 1.5 mg/L. Concentrations below 0.5 mg/L may lead to dental caries, while levels exceeding 1.5 mg/L can cause dental or skeletal fluorosis.
