Answer any five questions. All questions carry equal marks.
Main
Give an overview of soft computing and evolutionary computing.
Answer
Soft computing is a collection of computational techniques in computer science, machine learning, and engineering that study, model, and analyze complex phenomena. Unlike traditional methods, it is tolerant of imprecision, uncertainty, partial truth, and approximation to achieve tractability, robustness, and low solution cost. Its primary components include Fuzzy Logic, Neural Networks, Evolutionary Computation, and Probabilistic Reasoning.
Evolutionary computing is a subset of soft computing inspired by biological evolution and the principles of natural selection. It utilizes iterative progress, such as growth or development in a population of candidate solutions. These algorithms maintain a population of individuals that undergo processes of selection, crossover (recombination), and mutation. Over successive generations, the population evolves toward optimal or near-optimal solutions for complex optimization and search problems.
Differentiate between hard computing and soft computing with examples.
Answer
| Feature | Hard Computing | Soft Computing |
|---|---|---|
| Precision | Requires high precision and exactness. | Tolerates imprecision and uncertainty. |
| Logic | Based on binary logic (true/false). | Based on fuzzy logic (degrees of truth). |
| Model | Requires precise mathematical models. | Does not require precise models. |
| Robustness | Brittle; fails if input is noisy. | Robust; handles noise and ambiguity. |
| Example | Numerical analysis, database queries. | Neural networks, genetic algorithms. |
Hard computing relies on exact algorithms and binary logic, making it ideal for tasks like payroll processing or solving systems of linear equations where a single correct answer is required. In contrast, soft computing mimics human reasoning, making it suitable for tasks like pattern recognition, image processing, or stock market prediction, where data is often incomplete or noisy.
