Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1a

Compare DSR and DSDV algorithms.

2 marks

Answer

DSR (Dynamic Source Routing) is a reactive (on-demand) routing protocol that discovers routes only when needed by flooding the network with route requests, whereas DSDV (Destination-Sequenced Distance-Vector) is a proactive (table-driven) protocol that maintains up-to-date routing information for all nodes at all times.

Key differences include:

  • Routing Overhead: DSR incurs overhead only during route discovery, while DSDV incurs periodic overhead to maintain and update routing tables across the entire network.
  • Latency: DSR experiences higher initial latency due to the route discovery process, while DSDV provides lower latency for packet transmission as routes are pre-computed.
1b

Expand DREAM and what is distance effect in DREAM?

3 marks

Answer

DREAM stands for Distance Routing Effect Algorithm for Mobility. It is a proactive location-based routing protocol designed for mobile ad hoc networks.

The distance effect refers to the observation that the probability of two nodes needing to communicate decreases as the physical distance between them increases. In DREAM, this principle is used to optimize routing overhead by adjusting the frequency of location updates based on the distance between nodes:

  • Nodes that are closer to each other update their location information more frequently because the relative change in their positions is more significant.
  • Nodes that are farther apart update their location information less frequently, as the impact of their movement on routing decisions is relatively smaller.
