Discuss the brief history of Screen Design.
Answer
The history of screen design evolved from early command-line interfaces to modern graphical user interfaces (GUIs). In the 1960s and 1970s, interaction was primarily text-based, utilizing teletype terminals and command-line prompts where users memorized complex syntax. The 1980s marked a paradigm shift with the introduction of the Xerox Star, which pioneered the desktop metaphor, icons, windows, and the mouse. This era established the WIMP (Windows, Icons, Menus, Pointer) interface, which became the standard for personal computing. In the 1990s, the rise of the World Wide Web necessitated web-based screen design, focusing on navigation, hyperlinks, and browser-based layouts. The 2000s and 2010s introduced mobile computing and touch interfaces, shifting design focus toward responsive layouts, minimalism, and gesture-based interaction. Today, screen design emphasizes user-centered design, accessibility, and high-fidelity visual feedback across diverse device form factors.
Explain the concept of Direct Manipulation.
Answer
Direct Manipulation is an interaction style where users perform actions directly on visible objects on the screen, providing immediate visual feedback. It allows users to interact with digital representations of objects as if they were physical entities. The core principles include: 1) Continuous representation of the objects of interest; 2) Physical actions or labeled button presses instead of complex syntax; and 3) Rapid, incremental, and reversible operations whose impact on the object of interest is immediately visible. A classic example is dragging a file icon into a folder icon to move it, which provides a clear, intuitive mapping between the user's action and the system's response. This approach reduces the cognitive load on the user by eliminating the need to recall commands, thereby increasing learnability and user satisfaction.
