Part A
How to improve the clock rate of processor?
Answer
The clock rate of a processor can be improved by reducing the time required to complete a single clock cycle, which is primarily achieved through pipelining and reducing the logic depth of the processor's critical path. By breaking down complex instructions into smaller, independent stages, the hardware can operate at a higher frequency. Additionally, utilizing advanced semiconductor manufacturing processes to shrink transistor sizes reduces parasitic capacitance and gate delays, allowing for faster switching speeds.
What is an instruction cycle?
Answer
An instruction cycle is the fundamental sequence of operations performed by a CPU to process a single machine instruction. It consists of a repeating cycle of distinct phases that allow the processor to execute programs stored in memory.
The cycle typically involves the following primary steps:
- Fetch: The CPU retrieves the instruction from the memory address stored in the Program Counter (PC) and loads it into the Instruction Register (IR).
- Decode: The control unit interprets the instruction in the IR to determine the required operation and the necessary operands.
- Execute: The CPU performs the actual operation, which may involve arithmetic/logic calculations, data movement, or memory access.
Depending on the instruction, additional steps such as operand address calculation or memory operand fetching may be inserted between decoding and execution.
