What are the permissions for File Access in UNIX?

3 marks

Answer

In UNIX, file access permissions are defined for three categories of users: the owner (u), the group (g), and others (o). For each category, there are three primary types of permissions:

  • Read (r): Allows the user to view the contents of a file or list the contents of a directory.
  • Write (w): Allows the user to modify or delete a file, or create/remove files within a directory.
  • Execute (x): Allows the user to run a file as a program or access/enter a directory.

These permissions are represented by a 9-character string (e.g., rwxr-xr--) or numerically using octal values where read=4, write=2, and execute=1.
