Construct a diagonal scale 1/50, showing metres, decimetres and centimetres, to measure upto 5 metres. Mark a length 4.75 m on it.

8 marks

Answer

To construct the diagonal scale:

  1. Calculate the Representative Fraction (RF) = 1/50.
  2. Calculate the Length of Scale (LOS) = RF × Maximum Length = (1/50) × 500 cm = 10 cm.
  3. Draw a line AB of 10 cm and divide it into 5 equal parts, each representing 1 metre.
  4. Divide the first part into 10 equal divisions to represent decimetres.
  5. Erect perpendiculars at these divisions and draw 10 horizontal lines to create a height of 2-3 cm.
  6. Divide the vertical height into 10 equal divisions and draw horizontal lines.
  7. Connect the diagonal lines from the 0th decimetre division to the 1st division above, and so on, to represent centimetres.
  8. To mark 4.75 m: take 4 metres on the main scale, 7 decimetres on the sub-division, and move up to the 5th horizontal line to locate the 5th centimetre division.
b

Construct a parabola when the distance of the focus from directrix is 65 mm. Draw tangent and normal at any point on the parabola.

7 marks

Answer

To construct the parabola:

  1. Draw a vertical line as the directrix and a horizontal axis perpendicular to it.
  2. Mark the focus F at 65 mm from the directrix. Mark the vertex V at the midpoint (32.5 mm from both).
  3. Mark points 1, 2, 3, 4 on the axis beyond V. Draw vertical lines through these points.
  4. With F as center and distance equal to the distance from the point (e.g., 1) to the directrix, draw arcs to intersect the vertical line at points P1. Repeat for all points to obtain the parabola curve.
  5. To draw the tangent and normal: select any point P on the curve. Join P to F. Draw a line through F perpendicular to PF to intersect the directrix at T.
  6. Draw the tangent line passing through T and P.
  7. Draw the normal line perpendicular to the tangent at point P.

2

Draw an epicycloid generated by a rolling circle of 60 mm diameter for one complete revolution. The radius of directing circle is 100mm. Draw a tangent and a normal to the curve at 150mm from the center of the directing circle.

A line PQ has the end P at 10 mm above the H.P. and 15 mm in front of the V.P. The lengths of its front and top views are 60 mm and 50 mm respectively. If the top view of the line is inclined at 30° to the reference line, draw its projections. Determine its true length and inclination with the principal planes. Also, locate its traces.
