State and explain Varignon’s theorem?

2 marks

Answer

Varignon's theorem states that the moment of a force about any point is equal to the algebraic sum of the moments of its components about the same point. Mathematically, for a force F with components F1 and F2, M = r x F = r x (F1 + F2) = (r x F1) + (r x F2).

b

The greatest and least resultants of two forces F1 and F2 are 17 N and 3 N respectively. Determine the angle between them when their resultant is

√149
N.

3 marks

Answer

Given the maximum resultant R_max = F1 + F2 = 17 and minimum resultant R_min = F1 - F2 = 3. Solving these gives F1 = 10 N and F2 = 7 N. Using the resultant formula R = sqrt(F1^2 + F2^2 + 2*F1*F2*cos(θ)), we have 149 = 100 + 49 + 140*cos(θ). This simplifies to 140*cos(θ) = 0, therefore θ = 90 degrees.
