Answer PaperPaper Code: 132ACMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B.
ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, answer all questions.
iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

The probability density function is f(x) = K(3x-x^2), 1 ≤ x ≤ 2; 0, elsewhere. Find K.

2 marks

Answer

The total probability must equal 1. Integrating the function from 1 to 2:

∫[1 to 2] K(3x - x2) dx = 1

K [3(x2/2) - (x3/3)] from 1 to 2 = 1

K [(6 - 8/3) - (3/2 - 1/3)] = 1

K [10/3 - 7/6] = 1 => K [13/6] = 1, so K = 6/13.

b

If for a poisson variate P(X=2) = P(X=3). Find mean.

3 marks

Answer

For a Poisson distribution, P(X=k) = (e-λ λk) / k!. Given P(X=2) = P(X=3):

(e-λ λ2) / 2! = (e-λ λ3) / 3!

λ2 / 2 = λ3 / 6

λ = 6 / 2 = 3. The mean is 3.
