JNTU B.Tech II KINEMATICS OF MACHINES Previous Question Paper (April/May - 2023 - R13)
Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.
Part A
What is a flexible link?
Answer
A flexible link is a machine element that transmits motion or force through tension but cannot transmit compressive or bending loads. Examples include belts, ropes, chains, and springs.
Give some examples of mechanical advantage.
Answer
Mechanical advantage is the ratio of output force to input force. Examples include:
- Simple levers, where the ratio of lever arms determines the force amplification.
- Pulley systems, where the number of rope segments supporting the load increases the mechanical advantage.
- Screw jacks, which convert small rotational input torque into a large axial lifting force.

The crank and connecting rod of a theoretical steam engine are 0.5 m and 2 m long respectively. The crank makes 180 r.p.m. in the clockwise direction. When it has turned 45 degrees from the inner dead centre position, determine:
a) Velocity of piston
b) angular velocity of connecting rod
c) Velocity of point E on the connecting rod 1.5 m from the gudgeon pin
d) velocities of rubbing at the pins of the crank shaft, crank and crosshead when the diameters of their pins are 50 mm, 60 mm and 30 mm respectively
e) Position and linear velocity of any point G on the connecting rod which has the least velocity relative to crank shaft.

A symmetrical tangent cam operating a roller follower has the following particulars: Radius of base circle of cam = 40 mm, roller radius = 20 mm, angle of ascent = 75 degrees, total lift = 20mm, speed of cam shaft = 300 r.p.m. Determine: a) the principal dimensions of the cam, b) the equation for the displacement curve, when the follower is in contact with the straight flank, and c) the acceleration of the follower when it is in contact with the straight flank where it merges into the circular nose.
