Answer PaperPaper Code: 134BCMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B.
ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, answer all questions.
iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1.a

State Newton’s law of viscosity and write the S.I unit for dynamic and kinematic viscosities.

2 marks

Answer

Newton’s law of viscosity states that the shear stress on a fluid element layer is directly proportional to the rate of shear strain (velocity gradient). Mathematically, it is expressed as:

τ = μ (du/dy)

where τ is the shear stress, μ is the dynamic viscosity, and du/dy is the velocity gradient.

The S.I. unit for dynamic viscosity is N·s/m² (or Pa·s), and the S.I. unit for kinematic viscosity is m²/s.

1.b

Find the surface tension in a soap bubble of 40 mm diameter when the inside pressure is 2.5 N/m2 above the atmospheric pressure.

3 marks

Answer

For a soap bubble, which has two surfaces in contact with air, the relationship between the excess pressure (Δp), surface tension (σ), and the bubble diameter (d) is given by the formula:

Δp = 8σ / d

Given the diameter d = 40 mm = 0.04 m and the excess pressure Δp = 2.5 N/m2, we rearrange the formula to solve for σ:

σ = (Δp × d) / 8

Substituting the values:

σ = (2.5 × 0.04) / 8 = 0.1 / 8 = 0.0125 N/m

The surface tension of the soap bubble is 0.0125 N/m.

b

A U-tube manometer is used to measure the pressure of oil of specific gravity 0.85 flowing in a pipeline. Its left end is connected to the pipe and the right limb is open to the atmosphere. The Centre of the pipe is 100 mm below the level of mercury (S=13.6) in the right limb. If the difference of mercury level in the two limbs is 160 mm, determine the absolute pressure of the oil in the pipe.
