Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Write any two essential properties of moulding sand.

2 marks

Answer

Two essential properties of moulding sand are refractoriness (the ability to withstand high molten metal temperatures without fusing) and permeability (the ability to allow gases and steam to escape through the mould).

b

What are the functions of riser? Discuss different types of risers.

3 marks

Answer

The primary functions of a riser are to provide a reservoir of molten metal to compensate for liquid shrinkage during solidification and to facilitate the escape of gases. Risers are classified as top risers (open to the atmosphere at the top of the mould) and side risers (located on the side of the casting). They can also be categorized as blind risers (completely enclosed within the mould) or open risers.
