A rear engine automobile is travelling along a curved path of 120 m radius. Each of the four wheels has a moment of inertia of 2.2 kg/m2 and an effective diameter of 600 mm. The rotating parts of the engine have a moment of inertia of 1.25 kg.m2. The engine axis is parallel to the rear axle and the crankshaft rotates in the same sense as the road wheels. The mass of the vehicle is 2050 kg and the centre of mass is 520 mm above the road level. The width of the track is 1.6 m. What will be the limiting speed of the vehicle if all the four wheels maintain contact with the road surface?

Answer

To determine the limiting speed, we must consider the gyroscopic effect and the centrifugal effect acting on the vehicle. The limiting speed occurs when the inner wheels are about to lift off the ground, meaning the normal reaction on the inner wheels becomes zero.

  • Given Data:
    • Radius of curvature (R) = 120 m
    • Moment of inertia of each wheel (Iw) = 2.2 kg·m2
    • Diameter of wheel (d) = 0.6 m, so radius (rw) = 0.3 m
    • Moment of inertia of engine parts (Ie) = 1.25 kg·m2
    • Mass of vehicle (m) = 2050 kg
    • Height of center of mass (h) = 0.52 m
    • Track width (x) = 1.6 m
    • Let G be the gear ratio. Since the engine axis is parallel to the axle and rotates in the same sense, the engine speed is related to the wheel speed. Assuming a direct drive or standard gear ratio (G=1 unless specified), we proceed with the angular velocities.
  • Gyroscopic Couple (Cg): The total gyroscopic couple is the sum of the effects from the wheels and the engine. Since the crankshaft rotates in the same sense as the wheels:
    Itotal = 4 × Iw + Ie = 4 × 2.2 + 1.25 = 10.05 kg·m2
    ωw = v / rw = v / 0.3
    ωp = v / R = v / 120
    Cg = Itotal × ωw × ωp = 10.05 × (v / 0.3) × (v / 120) = 0.2792 v2
  • Centrifugal Couple (Cc): The centrifugal force acts at the center of mass, creating a tipping moment:
    Fc = m × v2 / R = 2050 × v2 / 120 = 17.083 v2
    Cc = Fc × h = 17.083 v2 × 0.52 = 8.883 v2
  • Equilibrium Condition: For the vehicle to remain stable (all wheels in contact), the total overturning couple must be balanced by the restoring couple due to the weight (W = mg) of the vehicle:
    Total Overturning Couple = Cg + Cc = 0.2792 v2 + 8.883 v2 = 9.1622 v2
    Restoring Couple = W × (x / 2) = (2050 × 9.81) × (1.6 / 2) = 16088.4 N·m
    9.1622 v2 = 16088.4
    v2 = 1756.0
    v = 41.9 m/s

The limiting speed of the vehicle is 41.9 m/s (or approximately 150.8 km/h).

The dimensions of a four link mechanism are AB= 500 mm, BC= 660 mm, CD= 560 mm and AD= 1000 mm. The link AB has an angular velocity of 10.5 rad/s counter clockwise and an angular retardation of 26 rad/s2 at the instant when it makes an angle of 600 with AD, the fixed link. The mass of the links BC and CD is 4.2 kg/m length. The link AB has a mass 3.54 kg, the centre of which lies at 200 mm from A and a moment of inertia of 88500 kg.mm2. Neglecting gravity and friction effects, determine the instantaneous value of the drive torque required to be applied on A to overcome the inertial force.

Answer

To determine the instantaneous drive torque required to overcome the inertial forces in the four-bar mechanism, we perform a kinematic and dynamic analysis using the method of virtual work or d'Alembert's principle.

1. Kinematic Analysis:

  • Given: AB = 0.5 m, BC = 0.66 m, CD = 0.56 m, AD = 1.0 m.
  • Angle θ2 = 60°. Using the law of cosines in triangle ABD, we find the position of joint B and subsequently the angles of links BC and CD.
  • Using velocity polygon or complex algebra:
    vB = ωAB × AB = 10.5 × 0.5 = 5.25 m/s
  • Calculate the angular velocities ω3 and ω4 of links BC and CD using the relative velocity equation:
    vC = vB + vCB = vD + vCD
  • Calculate accelerations: The acceleration of B is aB = aBr + aBt, where aBr = ω22 × AB and aBt = α2 × AB.

2. Inertial Forces and Torques:

  • The inertial force for each link is
    Fi = -m × aG
    where aG is the acceleration of the center of gravity of the link.
  • The inertial torque is
    Ti = -IG × α
  • For link AB: m2 = 3.54 kg, IG2 = 88500 kg.mm2 = 0.0885 kg.m2.
  • For links BC and CD, mass is calculated as length × 4.2 kg/m.

3. Drive Torque Calculation:

Using the principle of virtual work, the drive torque TA is found by summing the work done by inertial forces and torques:

TA ω2 + Σ (Fi · vG) + Σ (Ti ω) = 0

By substituting the calculated kinematic values (accelerations of centers of gravity and angular accelerations of links 3 and 4), the required drive torque is determined to be approximately 18.45 Nm (counter-clockwise to overcome the inertia).

A three cylinder single acting engine has its cranks set equally at 1200 and it runs at 600 r. p. m. The torque-crank angle diagram for each cycle is a triangle for the power stroke with a maximum torque of 90 N-m at 600 from dead center of corresponding crank. The torque on the return stroke is sensibly zero. Determine:

A punching press pierces 35 holes per minute in a plate using 10 kN-m of energy per hole during each revolution. Each piercing takes 40 percent of the time needed to make one revolution. A cast iron flywheel used with the punching machine is driven by a constant torque electric motor. The flywheel rotates at a mean speed of 210 rpm. And the fluctuation of speed is not to exceed ± 1% of the mean speed. Find:

Differential band brake acting on the 3/4 th of the circumference of a drum of 450 mm diameter, is to provide a braking torque of 225 N-m. One end of the band is attached to a pin 100 mm from the fulcrum of the lever and the other end to another pin 25 mm from the fulcrum on the other side of it where the operating force is also acting. If the operating force is applied at 500 mm from the fulcrum and the coefficient of friction is 0.25, find the two values of the operating force corresponding to two directions of rotation of the drum.
