Answer PaperPaper Code: 115EEMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B.
ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions.
iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a
How is tool life defined? Explain the factors affecting tool life.
2 marks

Answer

Tool life is defined as the actual cutting time a tool can perform between two successive sharpenings. Factors affecting tool life include cutting speed (the most significant factor), feed rate, depth of cut, tool geometry (rake and clearance angles), tool material, workpiece material, and the use of cutting fluids.

b
What assumptions were made by Merchant in arriving at his famous Merchant’s theory?
3 marks

Answer

Merchant's theory assumes that the cutting edge is perfectly sharp, the tool is a single-point cutting tool with a defined rake angle, the deformation occurs in a single plane (shear plane), the material behaves as a rigid-plastic solid, and the cutting process is continuous without a built-up edge.

a
A turning operation has to be performed on an aluminum rod of diameter 50 mm and length 300mm. The Spindle speed of lathe is given to be 500 RPM. The feed and depth of cut are 0.15mm/rev and 0.3 mm respectively. Draw a neat sketch of the turning operation described above. Find out the cutting speed in mm/s and the volumetric material removal rate (MRRv).
