JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech III METROLOGY AND MACHINE TOOLS Previous Question Paper (January/February - 2023 - R16)
Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B.
ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions.
iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.
Part A
Explain terms ‘shear plan’ and ‘shear zone’.
Answer
The shear plane is the imaginary plane extending from the cutting edge of the tool to the surface of the workpiece, along which the primary plastic deformation occurs during metal cutting. The shear zone is the narrow region of finite thickness surrounding the shear plane where the material undergoes intense shearing strain as it is transformed into a chip.
Describe the basic elements of metal cutting.
Answer
The basic elements of metal cutting involve the interaction between the cutting tool, the workpiece, and the machine tool to remove material in the form of chips. The fundamental components are:
- Workpiece: The material being machined, which is subjected to forces that cause plastic deformation and eventual shear failure.
- Cutting Tool: A wedge-shaped device with a specific geometry (rake angle and clearance angle) that penetrates the workpiece to induce shear.
- Chip Formation: The process where the material ahead of the tool is compressed and sheared along a defined shear plane, resulting in the removal of excess material as chips.
- Relative Motion: The controlled movement between the tool and the workpiece, typically defined by cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut, which determines the rate and geometry of material removal.
