Answer PaperPaper Code: 135BEMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Define shear angle and Chip thickness ratio.

2 marks

Answer

The shear angle is the angle between the shear plane and the direction of tool travel. The chip thickness ratio (r) is the ratio of the uncut chip thickness (t) to the actual chip thickness (tc) after deformation, expressed as r = t / tc.

b

Classify different types of chips and write its favorable factors for chip formations.

3 marks

Answer

Chips are classified as continuous, discontinuous, and continuous with built-up edge (BUE). Favorable factors include: for continuous chips, ductile materials and high cutting speeds; for discontinuous chips, brittle materials and low cutting speeds; and for BUE, high friction and low cutting speeds.

c
