Answer PaperPaper Code: 135CRMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B.
ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions.
iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1a

Define Nanomaterial.

2 marks

Answer

A nanomaterial is defined as any material having at least one external dimension in the nanoscale size range, typically between 1 and 100 nanometers. At this scale, materials exhibit unique physical, chemical, and biological properties—such as increased surface area-to-volume ratio, quantum effects, and enhanced reactivity—that differ significantly from those of the same material in bulk form.

1b

List out few Nano structures.

3 marks

Answer

Nanostructures are classified based on their dimensionality, representing the number of dimensions that are outside the nanometer range. Common examples include:

  • Zero-dimensional (0D) structures: Nanoparticles, quantum dots, and nanoclusters, where all three dimensions are at the nanoscale.
  • One-dimensional (1D) structures: Nanowires, nanotubes (such as carbon nanotubes), and nanorods, where two dimensions are at the nanoscale.
  • Two-dimensional (2D) structures: Nanosheets, nanofilms, and graphene, where only one dimension is at the nanoscale.
  • Three-dimensional (3D) structures: Nanostructured bulk materials, such as polycrystalline materials or dendrimers, which consist of a complex arrangement of nanoscale building blocks.
