a

Define ‘Surface azimuth angle’ and ‘Solar azimuth angle’.

2 marks

Answer

  • Surface Azimuth Angle (γ): The angle made in the horizontal plane between the line due south and the projection of the normal to the surface on the horizontal plane.
  • Solar Azimuth Angle (γs): The angular displacement of the sun's projection on the horizontal plane from the south meridian.
b

What are solar ponds? Explain its principle of working.

3 marks

Answer

A Solar Pond is a large-scale solar thermal energy collector with integrated heat storage. It works on the principle of density gradient: a salt concentration gradient is maintained such that the water at the bottom is much saltier (denser) than the top. This prevents convection currents, allowing the bottom layer to act as a heat trap while the top layer acts as an insulator.
