Main
What is an operating system? Explain operating system design and implementation.
Answer
An operating system is a system software that acts as an intermediary between a computer user and the computer hardware. Its primary goals are to execute user programs, make the computer system convenient to use, and use the computer hardware in an efficient manner.
Operating system design and implementation involve several key considerations:
- Design Goals: Designers must define user goals (convenience, ease of use, reliability) and system goals (efficiency, ease of maintenance, flexibility). These goals often conflict, requiring trade-offs.
- Policy vs. Mechanism: A critical principle is separating mechanism (how to do something) from policy (what will be done). This allows for flexibility; if a policy changes, the underlying mechanism remains unchanged.
- Implementation: Early operating systems were written in assembly language. Modern systems are primarily written in high-level languages like C or C++, which allow for faster development, easier debugging, and better portability.
- System Structure: Common structures include monolithic kernels (all services in one address space), layered approaches (modular hierarchy), microkernels (moving services to user space), and modular designs (loadable kernel modules).
Write short notes on computing environments.
Answer
Computing environments have evolved to meet diverse hardware and software requirements:
- Traditional Computing: Includes office and home environments, typically involving PCs connected to networks, providing a balance between local processing and shared resources.
- Mobile Computing: Designed for handheld devices like smartphones and tablets. These environments prioritize power management, touch-based interfaces, and wireless connectivity.
- Distributed Systems: A collection of physically separate, heterogeneous computer systems networked together to provide users with access to various resources, improving computational speed and reliability.
- Client-Server Computing: A model where servers provide resources or services to clients. This is the foundation for most web-based applications.
- Cloud Computing: Delivers computing services (servers, storage, databases) over the internet. It offers on-demand availability and scalability without requiring direct active management by the user.
- Real-Time Embedded Systems: Specialized systems found in industrial controllers or medical devices, where the operating system must guarantee response times within strict time constraints.
