Draw the ideal and actual indicator diagrams of a two-stroke SI engine. How are they different from a four stroke cycle engine?

8 marks

Answer

An ideal indicator diagram for a two-stroke SI engine is represented by a cycle consisting of four processes: isentropic compression, constant volume heat addition, isentropic expansion, and constant volume heat rejection. In practice, the actual indicator diagram shows rounded corners due to finite combustion time, gradual valve opening/closing, and pressure losses during scavenging. Unlike a four-stroke engine, which requires two full crankshaft revolutions (720 degrees) to complete one power cycle, the two-stroke engine completes the entire cycle in one revolution (360 degrees). Consequently, the two-stroke cycle lacks distinct intake and exhaust strokes, instead utilizing ports covered and uncovered by the piston, and it incorporates a scavenging process where fresh charge displaces exhaust gases, leading to higher power-to-weight ratios but lower thermal efficiency compared to four-stroke engines.

b

Explain the significance of stroke to bore ratio on IC Engine performance.

7 marks

Answer

The stroke-to-bore ratio (L/D ratio) significantly influences engine performance, combustion characteristics, and mechanical design. A long-stroke engine (L/D > 1) provides a higher expansion ratio, which generally improves thermal efficiency and low-end torque due to increased leverage on the crankshaft. However, it increases the mean piston speed, leading to higher frictional losses and limiting the maximum engine speed due to inertial stresses.

Conversely, a short-stroke or over-square engine (L/D < 1) allows for larger valve diameters, which improves volumetric efficiency and high-RPM power output by reducing flow restriction. Short-stroke designs also reduce the total engine height and weight. The choice between these configurations involves a trade-off: long-stroke engines are typically favored for fuel economy and heavy-duty applications, while short-stroke engines are preferred for high-performance, high-speed applications.

The free air delivered by a single stage, double acting air compressor measured at 1.013 bar and 15°C is 14 m³/min. The pressure and temperature in the cylinder during induction are 0.95 bar and 32°C. The delivery pressure is 7 bar and the index of compression and expansion, n = 1.3. If the clearance volume is 5% of the swept volume, calculate the indicated power and volumetric efficiency.

An axial flow compressor having eight stages and with 50% reaction compresses air in the pressure ratio of 4:1. The air enters the compressor at 20°C and flows through it with a constant speed of 90 m/s. The rotating blades of compressor rotate with a mean speed of 180 m/s. Isentropic efficiency of the compressor may be taken as 82%. Calculate: i) Work done by the machine, ii) Blades angles.
