Part A

1.a

From a heat transfer point of view, what is the difference between isotropic and unisotropic materials?

2 marks

Answer

An isotropic material exhibits uniform thermal conductivity in all directions, meaning the heat transfer rate is independent of the direction of the temperature gradient. In contrast, an anisotropic material has thermal conductivity that varies with direction, typically due to its internal structure or grain orientation, resulting in heat flux vectors that may not be parallel to the temperature gradient.

1.b

How does one-dimensional heat transfer differ from two-dimensional heat transfer?

3 marks

Answer

One-dimensional heat transfer occurs when the temperature gradient exists in only one spatial coordinate, such as the x-direction, meaning the temperature is independent of the other two coordinates (y and z). In contrast, two-dimensional heat transfer involves temperature variations along two spatial coordinates, such as x and y, requiring the analysis of heat flow paths in both directions simultaneously.

Mathematically, for steady-state conduction without internal heat generation, the one-dimensional case is governed by an ordinary differential equation, whereas the two-dimensional case requires a partial differential equation, specifically the Laplace equation:

∂2T/∂x2 + ∂2T/∂y2 = 0

While one-dimensional analysis is a simplification often used for thin plates or long cylinders where edge effects are negligible, two-dimensional analysis is necessary for complex geometries like corners, edges, or components where heat flux significantly deviates from a single axis.
