Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Name the materials for different parts of an IC Engines.

2 marks

Answer

Common materials include: Piston (Aluminum alloy or Cast iron), Cylinder block (Cast iron or Aluminum alloy), Connecting rod (Forged steel), Crankshaft (Forged steel or Nodular cast iron), and Valves (Silicon-chromium steel).

b

What is Octane number?

3 marks

Answer

The Octane number is a measure of the anti-knock quality of a spark-ignition engine fuel. It is defined as the percentage by volume of iso-octane in a mixture of iso-octane and normal heptane that matches the knocking intensity of the fuel under standard test conditions.
