B.Tech | III | II | R16 | May - 2019

Answer PaperPaper Code: 136CCMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

PART - A

Answer all questions (25 Marks)

1.a

Define mean effective pressure and stoichiometric air-fuel ratio.

2 marks

Answer

Mean Effective Pressure (MEP) is the theoretical constant pressure that, if applied on the piston during the power stroke, would produce the same amount of work as the actual variable pressure cycle. It is defined as the ratio of the net work done per cycle to the swept volume of the cylinder.

MEP = (Net Work Done) / (Swept Volume)

Stoichiometric air-fuel ratio is the chemically correct ratio of air to fuel required for complete combustion, where all fuel is burned using exactly the amount of oxygen available in the air, leaving no excess fuel or oxygen in the products.

1.b

What is the chemical composition of liquefied petroleum gas?

3 marks

Answer

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is primarily composed of a mixture of light hydrocarbon gases, specifically propane (C3H8) and butane (C4H10). Depending on the source and the specific grade, it may also contain small amounts of other hydrocarbons such as propylene, butylene, or trace amounts of ethane and pentane. These gases are stored under moderate pressure as a liquid to facilitate transport and storage, and they are typically odorized with ethyl mercaptan for safety detection.

A simple turbine jet unit was tested when stationary and the ambient conditions were 1 bar and 150C. The pressure ratio for the compressor was 4:1. A fuel consumption of 0.37 kg/s was obtained for an air flow of 23 kg/s. Calculate the thrust produced if the exhaust gases from the turbine were expanded to atmospheric pressure in a convergent nozzle. Assume the following data: Isentropic efficiency of compressor 80%, Isentropic efficiency of turbine 85%, Efficiency of nozzle 93%, Transmission efficiency 98%, Calorific value of fuel 42000 kJ/kg. Assume working fluid to be air throughout.
