Part A

1.a

Outline the significance of auxiliary motions in machine tools.

2 marks

Answer

Auxiliary motions are essential for the efficient operation of machine tools as they facilitate the non-cutting phases of the machining cycle. Their primary significance lies in reducing the idle time, which directly improves the overall productivity and economic efficiency of the machine. These motions include tasks such as workpiece loading and unloading, rapid traverse of tool or worktable to the starting position, indexing, and tool changing, all of which ensure that the machine spends the maximum possible proportion of its cycle time in active material removal.

1.b

Explain the motion transmission.

3 marks

Answer

Motion transmission refers to the process of transferring power, speed, and torque from a primary source, such as an electric motor, to the functional components of a machine tool, such as the spindle or feed mechanism. This process typically involves a combination of mechanical elements designed to achieve desired kinematic and dynamic characteristics.

The primary objectives of motion transmission in machine tools include:

  • Speed Regulation: Converting the constant speed of the motor into a range of required spindle speeds using gear trains, belt drives, or variable speed drives.
  • Directional Control: Changing the direction of rotation or converting rotary motion into linear motion, commonly achieved through lead screws, rack and pinion arrangements, or worm and worm wheel sets.
  • Torque Multiplication: Adjusting the output torque to match the cutting force requirements of the machining operation, often involving reduction gearboxes.

Effective motion transmission ensures precision and rigidity by minimizing backlash, vibrations, and frictional losses within the drive train.
