Part A

25 Marks

1a

Outline the significance of classical optimization techniques.

2 marks

Answer

Classical optimization techniques are significant because they provide the fundamental mathematical framework for solving constrained and unconstrained optimization problems using differential calculus. They are essential for identifying optimal solutions by setting the first-order derivatives of a function to zero and verifying optimality through second-order conditions, such as the Hessian matrix. These methods serve as the theoretical foundation for more complex numerical algorithms and are particularly effective for problems involving continuous and differentiable functions.

1b

What is the statement of an optimization problem?

3 marks

Answer

An optimization problem is defined as the process of finding the best solution from a set of available alternatives, typically by minimizing or maximizing a specific objective function subject to a set of constraints. Mathematically, it is stated as:

Minimize or Maximize f(x)

Subject to the constraints:

g_i(x) ≤ 0, i = 1, 2, ..., m
h_j(x) = 0, j = 1, 2, ..., p

Where x represents the vector of decision variables, f(x) is the objective function to be optimized, g_i(x) are the inequality constraints, and h_j(x) are the equality constraints that define the feasible region of the solution space.
