Why bulk material properties differ with nanomaterial properties? Explain with the help of any realistic example.

8 marks

Answer

Bulk material properties differ from nanomaterial properties primarily due to two factors: the quantum confinement effect and the high surface-to-volume ratio. As particle size decreases to the nanometer scale, a significant fraction of atoms reside on the surface rather than in the bulk, leading to increased surface energy and reactivity. Furthermore, when dimensions reach the de Broglie wavelength of electrons, energy levels become discrete rather than continuous, altering electronic, optical, and magnetic properties.

A realistic example is Gold (Au). In bulk form, gold is chemically inert, yellow in color, and a good conductor. However, at the nanoscale (typically below 10 nm), gold nanoparticles exhibit a deep red or purple color due to surface plasmon resonance, where conduction electrons oscillate collectively in response to light. Additionally, gold nanoparticles become highly catalytic, capable of facilitating reactions that bulk gold cannot, such as the oxidation of carbon monoxide at low temperatures.

b

Discuss the challenges and future prospects of nanotechnology.

7 marks

Answer

The development of nanotechnology faces several significant challenges, including:

  • Manufacturing Scalability: Producing nanomaterials with precise control over size, shape, and purity in large quantities remains difficult and costly.
  • Toxicity and Safety: The unique properties that make nanomaterials useful may also pose health risks, as their small size allows them to penetrate biological barriers, potentially causing unforeseen cellular damage.
  • Characterization Complexity: Standard analytical techniques are often insufficient to fully characterize materials at the atomic scale, requiring expensive and specialized equipment like TEM and AFM.
  • Environmental Impact: The long-term ecological consequences of releasing synthetic nanoparticles into the environment are currently poorly understood.

Despite these hurdles, the future prospects are vast. Nanotechnology is poised to revolutionize medicine through targeted drug delivery systems that minimize side effects, and energy storage by creating high-capacity, fast-charging batteries. In electronics, the development of molecular-scale transistors and quantum computing components promises to overcome the physical limits of traditional silicon-based chips, while advancements in nanocomposites will lead to materials that are significantly stronger, lighter, and more durable for aerospace and infrastructure applications.
