Part A

1a

Why regeneration process is used in Rankine cycle?

2 marks

Answer

The regeneration process is used in the Rankine cycle to increase the mean temperature of heat addition. By extracting a portion of steam from the turbine to preheat the feedwater before it enters the boiler, the amount of external heat required is reduced, which significantly improves the thermal efficiency of the cycle.

1b

Difference between natural and artificial draught.

3 marks

Answer

The primary differences between natural and artificial draught are based on the method of generation and operational efficiency:

  • Method of Generation: Natural draught is produced by a chimney or stack using the density difference between hot flue gases and cold atmospheric air. Artificial draught is produced mechanically using fans, blowers, or steam jets.
  • Efficiency and Control: Natural draught is inefficient as it depends on weather conditions and chimney height, offering no control over combustion rates. Artificial draught provides precise control over the air supply, allowing for higher combustion rates and better efficiency regardless of external conditions.
  • Application: Natural draught is suitable for small-scale boilers with low resistance. Artificial draught is essential for large-scale industrial boilers, high-capacity power plants, and systems with economizers or air preheaters that create significant flow resistance.
