JNTU B.Tech IV ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING Previous Question Paper (February/March - 2022 - R18)
Answer any five questions. All questions carry equal marks.
Main
Many terms have been used to mean Rapid Prototyping. Discuss three such terms and explain why they have been used in place of Rapid Prototyping.
Answer
Rapid Prototyping (RP) has evolved into various terms that better reflect the capabilities of modern manufacturing technologies. Three such terms are:
- Additive Manufacturing (AM): This is the most technically accurate term. It describes the process of joining materials to make objects from 3D model data, usually layer upon layer, as opposed to subtractive manufacturing. It is used to emphasize that the technology is now a viable production method, not just for prototyping.
- Solid Freeform Fabrication (SFF): This term highlights the ability to create complex, intricate geometries without the need for traditional tooling, molds, or dies. It emphasizes the freedom of design and the lack of geometric constraints inherent in conventional manufacturing.
- Direct Digital Manufacturing (DDM): This term focuses on the transition from a digital CAD file directly to a functional end-use part. It is used to shift the perception of the technology from a design-verification tool to a direct manufacturing process that bypasses intermediate tooling stages.
These terms are used because 'Rapid Prototyping' implies the technology is limited to early-stage design models. As the technology matured to include high-strength materials and production-grade accuracy, these new terms were adopted to signify its transition into functional, end-use manufacturing.
Distinguish between Traditional prototyping and Rapid prototyping.
Answer
| Feature | Traditional Prototyping | Rapid Prototyping |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturing Approach | Subtractive (machining) or Formative (casting/molding) | Additive (layer-by-layer) |
| Tooling Requirement | Requires dedicated molds, dies, or jigs | Tool-less manufacturing |
| Lead Time | High (days to weeks) | Low (hours to days) |
| Geometric Complexity | Limited by tool access and draft angles | High; handles complex internal structures easily |
| Material Waste | High (due to material removal) | Low (near-net-shape production) |
| Cost for Low Volume | Very high due to tooling setup | Low; cost is independent of part complexity |
