Classify the partial differential equations for fluid flow and heat transfer problems and suggest the possible finite difference solution for different equations.

7 marks

Answer

Partial differential equations (PDEs) governing fluid flow and heat transfer are classified based on the discriminant of the general second-order equation. For a general equation of the form

A(∂²φ/∂x²) + B(∂²φ/∂x∂y) + C(∂²φ/∂y²) + D(∂φ/∂x) + E(∂φ/∂y) + Fφ + G = 0
, the classification is as follows:

  • Elliptic: Occurs when B² - 4AC < 0. These describe steady-state, equilibrium problems such as potential flow or steady heat conduction (e.g., Laplace or Poisson equations). They are solved using iterative methods like Jacobi, Gauss-Seidel, or Successive Over-Relaxation (SOR).
  • Parabolic: Occurs when B² - 4AC = 0. These describe transient, time-dependent diffusion processes like unsteady heat conduction or boundary layer flow. They are typically solved using marching methods in time, such as the Crank-Nicolson or Fully Implicit schemes.
  • Hyperbolic: Occurs when B² - 4AC > 0. These describe wave propagation and transient convection phenomena. They are solved using explicit methods like the Lax-Wendroff or MacCormack schemes, ensuring the CFL stability condition is met.

Solve the following algebraic simultaneous equations using Gauss Elimination method.

2x + 5y + 7z = 15, 4x + 3y + 4z = 21, x + 4y + 3z = 12
8 marks

Answer

Given the system of equations:

2x + 5y + 7z = 15 (1)
4x + 3y + 4z = 21 (2)
x + 4y + 3z = 12 (3)

Step 1: Form the augmented matrix [A|B]:

[2 5 7 | 15]
[4 3 4 | 21]
[1 4 3 | 12]

Step 2: Perform Gaussian elimination. Swap R1 and R3 for a pivot of 1:

[1 4 3 | 12]
[4 3 4 | 21]
[2 5 7 | 15]

Perform row operations: R2 = R2 - 4R1 and R3 = R3 - 2R1:

[1 4 3 | 12]
[0 -13 -8 | -27]
[0 -3 1 | -9]

Eliminate y from R3: R3 = R3 - (3/13)R2:

[1 4 3 | 12]
[0 -13 -8 | -27]
[0 0 37/13 | -36/13]

Step 3: Back substitution:

(37/13)z = -36/13 => z = -36/37 ≈ -0.973
-13y - 8(-36/37) = -27 => -13y = -27 - 288/37 => y = 1287/481 ≈ 2.676
x + 4(1287/481) + 3(-36/37) = 12 => x = 12 - 10.704 + 2.919 => x = 4.215

Consider a steady state heat conduction in a slab of thickness ‘L’ in which the energy is generated at a constant rate of Q W/m³. The boundary surface at x = 0 is maintained at constant heat flux q W/m², the boundary condition at the other surface at x = L is by convection ‘h’ and ambient temperature is T∞.
