Draw p-V and T-s diagrams of actual air refrigeration system and discuss the salient points.

7 marks

Answer

The actual air refrigeration cycle (Bell-Coleman cycle) deviates from the ideal reversed Brayton cycle due to irreversibilities in the compressor and expander, as well as pressure drops in the heat exchangers. On the p-V diagram, the compression and expansion processes are polytropic (PVn = C) rather than isentropic, resulting in a larger area enclosed by the cycle compared to the ideal case. On the T-s diagram, these processes show an increase in entropy due to internal friction and heat transfer.

Salient points include:

  • Polytropic Processes: Compression and expansion are non-isentropic, leading to higher work input and lower work output.
  • Pressure Losses: Frictional resistance in pipes and heat exchangers causes pressure drops, reducing the effective pressure ratio.
  • Heat Transfer: Heat gain from the surroundings during the cold air flow reduces the net refrigerating effect.
  • Efficiency: The overall COP is significantly lower than the ideal cycle due to these losses.

In a Bell-Coleman cycle of a refrigerator system, air is taken in at 1 bar and a temperature of -8°C. The compression ratio maintained in the compressor is 4 by following the law of compression and expansion as

PV1.2 = Constant
. If the maximum temperature of the cycle is 25°C, then find mean effective pressure, work required, net refrigerating effect and COP.

Answer

Given: P1 = 1 bar, T1 = 265 K (-8°C), rp = 4, n = 1.2, Tmax = T3 = 298 K (25°C). For air, Cp = 1.005 kJ/kgK, R = 0.287 kJ/kgK.

1. Temperatures:

T2 = T1(rp)(n-1)/n = 265(4)0.2/1.2 = 265(1.2599) = 333.87 K
T4 = T3(1/rp)(n-1)/n = 298(1/4)0.2/1.2 = 298(0.7937) = 236.52 K

2. Work Calculations (per kg of air):

Wcomp = [nR/(n-1)] * (T2 - T1) = [1.2 * 0.287 / 0.2] * (333.87 - 265) = 1.722 * 68.87 = 118.57 kJ/kg
Wexp = [nR/(n-1)] * (T3 - T4) = 1.722 * (298 - 236.52) = 105.85 kJ/kg
Wnet = Wcomp - Wexp = 118.57 - 105.85 = 12.72 kJ/kg

3. Refrigerating Effect (RE):

RE = Cp(T1 - T4) = 1.005 * (265 - 236.52) = 28.64 kJ/kg

4. COP:

COP = RE / Wnet = 28.64 / 12.72 = 2.25

5. Mean Effective Pressure (MEP):

MEP = Wnet / (v1 - v2) where v1 = RT1/P1 = 0.287*265/100 = 0.7605 m3/kg and v2 = v1/rp(1/n) = 0.7605 / 4(1/1.2) = 0.240 m3/kg
MEP = 12.72 / (0.7605 - 0.240) = 24.43 kPa = 0.244 bar

A single stage, single acting reciprocating compressor has a bore of 200 mm and a stroke of 300 mm. It receives vapour refrigerant at 1 bar and delivers it at 5.5 bar. If the compression and expansion follows the law

PV1.3 = constant
and the clearance volume is 5% of the stroke volume, then determine (i) The power required to drive the compressor, if it runs at 500 rpm and (ii) The volumetric efficiency of the compressor.
