Explain in brief how heating is done in the following cases:

i) Resistance heating

ii) Induction heating

iii) Dielectric heating

9 marks

Answer

i) Resistance heating: This method relies on the Joule effect, where heat is produced when an electric current passes through a high-resistance material. The heat generated is proportional to the square of the current and the resistance (I²R). It is commonly used in furnaces, ovens, and domestic appliances.

ii) Induction heating: This process utilizes electromagnetic induction. An alternating magnetic field is produced by a coil carrying AC, which induces eddy currents in a nearby conducting (magnetic) workpiece. These eddy currents generate heat due to the material's resistance. It is highly efficient for metal melting and surface hardening.

iii) Dielectric heating: This is used for non-conducting (insulating) materials. The material is placed between two metal electrodes subjected to a high-frequency AC voltage. The rapidly alternating electric field causes molecular friction within the dielectric material, resulting in uniform internal heating. It is widely applied in the plastic and food processing industries.

At full load of 10 h.p, the temperature rise of a motor is 25°C after one hour, and 40°C after 2 hours. Find the final temperature rise on full load. Assume that the iron losses are 80% of full load copper losses.

6 marks

Answer

The temperature rise of a motor is given by the formula:

θ = θf(1 - e-t/τ)

Given:

At t = 1 h, θ = 25°C: 25 = θf(1 - e-1/τ) --- (1)

At t = 2 h, θ = 40°C: 40 = θf(1 - e-2/τ) --- (2)

Let x = e-1/τ. Then (1) becomes 25 = θf(1 - x) and (2) becomes 40 = θf(1 - x²). Since (1 - x²) = (1 - x)(1 + x):

40 = θf(1 - x)(1 + x)

Substituting 25 = θf(1 - x):

40 = 25(1 + x) => 1 + x = 1.6 => x = 0.6

Now, substitute x = 0.6 into (1):

25 = θf(1 - 0.6) = θf(0.4)

θf = 25 / 0.4 = 62.5°C

The final temperature rise on full load is 62.5°C.

A 40 kW, 3-phase, 400 volts resistance oven is to employ Ni-Cr strip of 0.3 mm thickness. The heating elements are star connected. If the wire temperature is to be 1127°C and that of charge is to be 727°C, estimate the suitable width and length of the wire required. Radiation efficiency = 0.6, Specific resistance of Ni-Cr = 1.03 × 10^-6 ohm-m. Emissivity = 0.9.
