JNTU B.Tech IV AUTOMATION IN MANUFACTURING Previous Question Paper (September - 2022 - R16)
Answer any five questions. All questions carry equal marks.
Main
Describe the pneumatic components used in automation systems.
Answer
Pneumatic systems utilize compressed air as a medium to transmit and control energy. The primary components include:
- Air Compressor: The power source that converts mechanical energy into compressed air energy.
- Air Treatment Units (FRL): A combination of Filter (to remove contaminants), Regulator (to maintain constant pressure), and Lubricator (to reduce friction in moving parts).
- Control Valves: Devices such as directional control valves (DCVs) that manage the flow direction, pressure, and rate of the air to actuate components.
- Actuators: Convert pneumatic energy back into mechanical motion, typically linear (cylinders) or rotary (pneumatic motors).
- Piping and Fittings: The network of hoses and connectors that transport air throughout the system.
Explain different strategies for automation and process improvement.
Answer
Automation strategies aim to increase productivity, reduce costs, and improve quality. Key strategies include:
- USA Principle: Understand the existing process, Simplify the process, and then Automate. This prevents the automation of inefficient or unnecessary steps.
- Ten Strategies for Automation: These include intensification of production, integration of operations, increased flexibility, improved material handling, online inspection, process control, and computer-integrated manufacturing.
- Process Improvement: Focuses on reducing cycle times, minimizing setup times, and eliminating non-value-added activities (waste reduction).
- Flexible Automation: Implementing systems capable of handling a variety of product designs with minimal downtime for changeovers, essential for high-mix, low-volume production environments.
- Total Productive Maintenance (TPM): Ensuring high equipment availability through proactive maintenance to prevent unplanned downtime, which is critical for the reliability of automated lines.

The following data apply to a 10-station in-line transfer machine: P = 0.01 (all stations have an equal probability of failure) Tc = 0.3 min, Td = 3.0 min. Using the upper-bound approach. Compute the following for the transfer machine: (i) F, the frequency of line stops. (ii) Rp, the average production rate. (iii) E, the line efficiency.
