How many environmental parameters are classified what are they?

15 marks

Answer

Environmental parameters are typically classified into four major categories to facilitate systematic assessment and monitoring of the environment. These categories represent the core components of the ecosystem that are impacted by developmental activities:

  1. Physical Parameters: These include abiotic components such as air quality (particulate matter, gases), water quality (pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, chemical oxygen demand), soil characteristics (texture, erosion, nutrient content), and noise levels.
  2. Biological Parameters: These focus on the living components of the environment, including flora (vegetation cover, rare or endangered species) and fauna (wildlife habitats, biodiversity indices, aquatic life, and migratory patterns).
  3. Socio-Economic Parameters: These relate to the human environment, covering aspects such as land use patterns, demographic changes, employment opportunities, public health, infrastructure development, and cultural/heritage sites.
  4. Chemical Parameters: These involve the presence of specific pollutants or chemical substances in the environment, such as heavy metals, pesticides, toxic organic compounds, and nutrient loading (nitrates/phosphates) in water bodies.

In practice, these parameters are often integrated into an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) framework to determine the baseline status and predict the potential magnitude and significance of changes caused by a proposed project.

2

List out the impact identification methods of EIA. Explain Network method, overlay method and Ad-hoc method.

15 marks

Answer

Impact identification methods in Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) are systematic approaches used to identify, predict, and evaluate the potential environmental consequences of a proposed project. The primary methods include:

  • Ad-hoc method
  • Overlay method
  • Checklist method
  • Matrix method
  • Network method
  • Simulation modeling

Ad-hoc Method: This is the simplest and most informal approach, relying on the expertise and professional judgment of a multidisciplinary team. Experts familiar with the project area and the type of development provide qualitative assessments of potential impacts. While it is quick and requires no specialized training, it lacks a structured framework, is highly subjective, and is prone to bias or oversight of secondary impacts.

Overlay Method: This method involves the use of transparent maps or Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to represent different environmental features (e.g., topography, vegetation, water bodies, land use) of a project site. By stacking these maps, planners can identify spatial conflicts between the project activities and sensitive environmental areas. It is an excellent visual tool for site selection and identifying areas of high environmental sensitivity, though it is primarily qualitative and may not account for the magnitude or duration of impacts.

Network Method: This approach maps the cause-effect relationships between project activities and environmental components. It recognizes that environmental impacts are often sequential, where a primary impact triggers secondary and tertiary effects (a chain reaction). By creating a flow chart or network diagram, the method helps identify indirect or cumulative impacts that other methods might miss. It is highly effective for complex projects where ecological interdependencies are significant, though it can become cumbersome and difficult to quantify as the number of interactions increases.
