a

Define biomass. List the various sources and uses of biomass in energy sector.

3 marks

Answer

Biomass is organic material derived from plants and animals, which functions as a renewable energy source by storing sunlight as chemical energy. Primary sources include agricultural residues, forestry waste, animal manure, municipal solid waste, and energy crops like sugarcane or maize. In the energy sector, biomass is used for electricity generation through combustion, heat production, and the manufacturing of liquid biofuels for transportation.

b

Explain the raw materials required and process steps for the production of bioethanol and biodiesel. Mention the uses of biofuels in transport sector.

12 marks

Answer

Bioethanol is produced primarily from sugar-rich crops (sugarcane), starch-rich crops (corn, wheat), or lignocellulosic biomass. The process involves:

  1. Pretreatment to break down complex structures.
  2. Hydrolysis to convert starch or cellulose into fermentable sugars.
  3. Fermentation using yeast to convert sugars into ethanol.
  4. Distillation and dehydration to achieve fuel-grade purity.
Biodiesel is produced from vegetable oils (soybean, sunflower), animal fats, or used cooking oils through transesterification, where the oil reacts with an alcohol (usually methanol) in the presence of a catalyst (sodium or potassium hydroxide) to produce fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) and glycerol. In the transport sector, bioethanol is blended with gasoline (e.g., E10, E85) to increase octane ratings and reduce carbon emissions, while biodiesel is blended with conventional diesel (e.g., B5, B20) to enhance lubricity and reduce particulate matter emissions in compression-ignition engines.
