What are the different methods of prospecting?
Answer
Prospecting methods are systematic techniques used to locate mineral deposits by identifying anomalies in the Earth's crust. These methods are broadly categorized into:
- Geological Methods: Involves systematic mapping, lithological studies, and structural analysis to identify geological environments favorable for mineralization.
- Geochemical Methods: Based on the detection of trace element dispersion patterns in soil, stream sediments, water, or vegetation that indicate underlying ore bodies.
- Geophysical Methods: Utilizes physical properties of rocks such as density, magnetism, electrical conductivity, and radioactivity to detect subsurface anomalies. Key techniques include magnetic, gravity, seismic, and electrical resistivity surveys.
- Remote Sensing: Employs aerial photography and satellite imagery to identify surface features, alteration zones, and structural lineaments associated with mineral deposits.
- Direct Prospecting: Includes pitting, trenching, and exploratory drilling to physically sample and confirm the presence and grade of a mineral deposit.
Explain prospecting by Magnetic Method.
Answer
The magnetic method is a geophysical technique that measures variations in the Earth's magnetic field caused by the presence of magnetic minerals, primarily magnetite, within subsurface rocks. The fundamental principle is that different rock types possess varying degrees of magnetic susceptibility.
The procedure involves:
- Instrumentation: Magnetometers, such as Fluxgate, Proton Precession, or Optically Pumped magnetometers, are used to measure the total magnetic field intensity or vertical component.
- Data Acquisition: Surveys are conducted along grid lines on the ground or via airborne platforms. Measurements are recorded at regular intervals to map the magnetic intensity across the area.
- Data Processing: Observed data must be corrected for diurnal variations (temporal changes in the Earth's field) and the regional magnetic field.
- Interpretation: The resulting magnetic anomalies—deviations from the expected background field—are plotted as contour maps. High magnetic anomalies often indicate concentrations of magnetic ores like magnetite, pyrrhotite, or ilmenite, while structural features like faults or dykes can be inferred from linear magnetic patterns.
This method is highly effective for locating iron ore deposits, identifying basic igneous intrusions, and mapping geological structures that control mineralization.
