1

Discuss on status of Metalliferous mining industry in India, with a particular reference to Iron ore, Gold and Copper.

15 marks

Answer

The Indian metalliferous mining industry is a critical pillar of the national economy, contributing significantly to industrial growth and infrastructure development. The sector is governed by the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, with the Ministry of Mines overseeing policy and regulation. While India possesses vast mineral wealth, the industry faces challenges related to environmental clearances, land acquisition, and the need for advanced technological adoption.

Iron Ore: India is one of the world's largest producers and exporters of iron ore. The industry is concentrated primarily in Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Karnataka. The sector is characterized by high-grade hematite deposits. Recent policy shifts have focused on promoting domestic value addition through the pelletization and beneficiation of fines, reducing dependence on raw ore exports and supporting the domestic steel industry's expansion.

Gold: India's gold mining sector remains relatively underdeveloped despite high domestic demand. Production is largely confined to the Hutti Gold Mines in Karnataka. The industry is constrained by the deep-seated nature of deposits, high exploration costs, and complex geological conditions. Current efforts are directed toward the National Mineral Exploration Policy (NMEP) to incentivize private sector participation in exploration and the modernization of existing underground operations to improve recovery rates.

Copper: The copper mining industry in India is dominated by Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL), a public sector undertaking. Major operations are located in the Singhbhum Copper Belt (Jharkhand), Malanjkhand (Madhya Pradesh), and Khetri (Rajasthan). The industry faces significant challenges due to low-grade ore deposits and the high cost of extraction. Consequently, India relies heavily on the import of copper concentrates to feed its smelting capacity. Future growth is tied to the exploration of deep-seated deposits and the implementation of large-scale open-pit and underground mining technologies to enhance domestic production efficiency.

2

Explain various factors which influence level interval in underground metal mines.

15 marks

Answer

The level interval is the vertical distance between two consecutive levels in an underground metal mine. Determining the optimum level interval is a critical economic and operational decision that balances capital expenditure against operating costs. The following factors influence the selection of level interval:

  • Orebody Characteristics: The dip, thickness, and continuity of the orebody are primary factors. In steeply dipping deposits, a larger level interval is often preferred to reduce the number of levels and associated development costs. Conversely, in thin or irregular orebodies, smaller intervals are necessary to maintain geological control and minimize dilution.
  • Mining Method: The chosen stoping method dictates the interval. Methods like shrinkage stoping or cut-and-fill mining require specific intervals based on the height of the stope that can be safely supported and accessed. Mechanized methods often allow for larger intervals due to the reach of equipment.
  • Development Costs: Increasing the level interval reduces the total length of horizontal development (drifts, cross-cuts) required per ton of ore, thereby lowering initial capital investment. However, this must be balanced against the cost of vertical development like raises and ore passes.
  • Ore Handling and Transportation: Larger intervals increase the height of ore passes, which can lead to hang-ups and maintenance challenges. The capacity of the hoisting system and the efficiency of gravity-based ore transport systems are constrained by the vertical distance between levels.
  • Ventilation and Safety: Shorter intervals provide more frequent access to fresh air and secondary egress routes, improving safety. Larger intervals may require more complex auxiliary ventilation systems to ensure adequate airflow at the working face.
  • Geotechnical Conditions: The stability of the host rock and orebody determines the maximum height of a stope before ground support becomes prohibitively expensive or unsafe. In weak rock masses, smaller level intervals are mandatory to ensure stope stability.
  • Exploration and Grade Control: Frequent levels allow for more intensive diamond drilling and sampling, which improves the accuracy of grade estimation and reduces the risk of ore loss or excessive dilution during extraction.

Ultimately, the selection is an optimization problem where the sum of development costs, stoping costs, and the cost of ore loss/dilution is minimized over the life of the mine.
