Answer any Five Questions. All Questions Carry Equal Marks.
Main
Explain the scope of production planning and control.
Answer
The scope of Production Planning and Control (PPC) encompasses the entire lifecycle of manufacturing operations, ensuring the efficient utilization of resources to meet customer demand. Its primary functions include:
- Planning: Determining the quantity, quality, and timing of production. This involves forecasting demand, capacity planning, and material requirements planning (MRP).
- Routing: Establishing the optimal sequence of operations and the path a product follows through various machines and workstations.
- Scheduling: Assigning specific start and finish times for each operation to ensure timely delivery and optimal machine utilization.
- Dispatching: The execution phase where work orders are released, and materials are moved to the production floor to initiate the process.
- Follow-up and Expediting: Monitoring progress against the schedule, identifying bottlenecks, and taking corrective actions to minimize delays or deviations.
- Inventory Control: Managing raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished goods to balance holding costs against service levels.
Explain different types of production systems and differentiate between them.
Answer
Production systems are categorized based on volume and variety. The main types are:
- Job Shop Production: Characterized by low volume and high variety. Products are made to customer specifications in small batches using general-purpose equipment.
- Batch Production: Involves producing a limited number of identical items in a group. It balances flexibility and efficiency, using specialized tools for specific batches.
- Mass Production: High volume, low variety. Standardized products are manufactured using specialized, automated equipment and assembly lines to achieve economies of scale.
- Continuous Production: Extremely high volume with no variety. The process runs 24/7 (e.g., oil refineries or chemical plants) where the product flow is continuous and highly automated.
The differentiation lies in the trade-off between flexibility and efficiency: Job shops offer maximum flexibility but lower efficiency, whereas continuous production offers maximum efficiency but zero flexibility for product changes.
