Part A

1a

Explain superposition law and law of transmissibility?

2 marks

Answer

The Principle of Superposition states that the combined effect of a system of forces acting on a rigid body is the algebraic sum of the effects of the individual forces applied separately. This principle holds true provided the material remains within its elastic limit and the deformations are small enough that the geometry of the body does not change significantly.

The Principle of Transmissibility states that the state of rest or motion of a rigid body remains unchanged if a force acting on the body is replaced by another force of the same magnitude and direction acting anywhere along the same line of action. This implies that a force can be treated as a sliding vector when applied to a rigid body.

1b

Define equilibrium of a body and give conditions of equilibrium when subjected to Forces?

3 marks

Answer

A body is said to be in equilibrium when the resultant of all forces and moments acting on it is zero, meaning the body remains at rest or continues to move with a constant velocity. For a body subjected to a system of coplanar forces, the conditions of equilibrium are expressed as the sum of all forces in the x-direction, the sum of all forces in the y-direction, and the sum of all moments about any point in the plane must each equal zero.
