9 marks

Answer

Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman was born on November 7, 1888, in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. Raised in a family that valued academic pursuit, his father was a lecturer in physics and mathematics, which provided Raman with an intellectually stimulating environment from a young age. He was a child prodigy, completing his secondary education early and graduating from Presidency College, Madras, at the age of 16 with a gold medal in physics.

His early life significantly impacted his scientific success in several ways. The academic atmosphere at home nurtured his innate curiosity and provided him with a strong foundation in physics and mathematics. His early exposure to advanced scientific concepts allowed him to begin original research while still a student. Furthermore, his ability to excel in a formal education system while simultaneously pursuing independent inquiry instilled in him the discipline and confidence required to challenge established scientific paradigms, eventually leading to his discovery of the Raman Effect.
