Find the current I supplied by the battery of the Figure through delta / star transformation.

8 marks

Answer

To find the current I supplied by the battery, identify the delta network formed by the resistors. Let the resistors in delta be R1, R2, and R3. Convert this delta network into an equivalent star network with resistors Ra, Rb, and Rc using the transformation formulas:

Ra = (R1 * R2) / (R1 + R2 + R3)
Rb = (R2 * R3) / (R1 + R2 + R3)
Rc = (R3 * R1) / (R1 + R2 + R3)

Once the delta is replaced by the star, the circuit simplifies into a series-parallel combination. Calculate the equivalent resistance R_eq of the entire circuit by adding the series branches and simplifying the parallel branches. Finally, apply Ohm's law to find the total current:

I = V / R_eq

Explain Kirchhoff’s laws with one example each.

7 marks

Answer

Kirchhoff’s Current Law (KCL) states that the algebraic sum of currents meeting at any junction in an electrical circuit is zero, or the sum of currents entering a node equals the sum of currents leaving it. For example, if 5A and 3A enter a node and 4A leaves, the remaining current leaving must be 4A to satisfy the conservation of charge.

Kirchhoff’s Voltage Law (KVL) states that the algebraic sum of all voltages around any closed loop in a circuit is zero. This is based on the law of conservation of energy. For a single loop with a voltage source V and resistors R1 and R2, the law is expressed as:

V - I*R1 - I*R2 = 0

This implies the sum of voltage drops across components equals the applied source voltage.
