B.Tech | II | II-I | R13 | April/May - 2018

Answer PaperPaper Code: 113CCMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit.

PART A

(25 Marks)

125 marks
a

Explain the concept of macroscopic and microscopic approach.

2 marks

Answer

The macroscopic approach considers a large quantity of matter without regard to individual molecules, focusing on time-averaged effects like pressure and temperature. The microscopic approach (statistical thermodynamics) focuses on the behavior of individual molecules and their interactions, using statistical methods to determine the aggregate properties of the system.

b

Calculate the temperature at which the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales agree.

3 marks

Answer

To find the temperature where Celsius (C) and Fahrenheit (F) scales agree, set C = F = x in the conversion formula:

x = (x - 32) * (5/9)

Solving for x:

9x = 5x - 160
4x = -160
x = -40

The scales agree at -40 degrees.

b

A non-flow system undergoes a frictionless process according to a law p v1.4 = constant, where p is in bar and the volume υ is in m3/kg. During the process, the volume changes from 0.12m3/kg to 0.04 m3/kg and temperature increases by 133°C. The change in internal energy of the fluid is given as du=Cυ dT, where Cυ = 0.71 kJ/kg.K and dT is temperature change. Find out (i) heat transferred, and (ii) change in enthalpy. Assume a fluid quantity of 10 kg.
