Answer PaperPaper Code: 133BWMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Differentiate between microscopic and macroscopic thermodynamics.

2 marks

Answer

Macroscopic thermodynamics considers a system as a whole, focusing on observable properties like pressure, temperature, and volume without regard to individual molecular behavior. Microscopic thermodynamics (statistical thermodynamics) analyzes the system by considering the behavior of individual molecules and their statistical averages to determine macroscopic properties.

b

What is the importance of thermodynamic equilibrium? Explain.

3 marks

Answer

Thermodynamic equilibrium is essential because it ensures that the properties of a system are uniform and constant over time. A system is in equilibrium only when it satisfies mechanical, thermal, and chemical equilibrium simultaneously. This state is a prerequisite for defining thermodynamic properties and applying state equations, as properties would otherwise vary unpredictably.
