JNTU B.Tech II THERMAL SCIENCE Previous Question Paper (September/October - 2023 - R18)
Note: Part A is compulsory (25 marks). In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit (50 marks).
Part A
Answer
A system is in thermodynamic equilibrium if it satisfies three conditions simultaneously:
- Mechanical equilibrium: No unbalanced forces exist within the system or between the system and its surroundings (no pressure gradients).
- Thermal equilibrium: The temperature remains uniform throughout the system and is equal to that of the surroundings.
- Chemical equilibrium: There are no chemical reactions occurring and no net transfer of matter between phases or components.
Answer
A path function is a property whose value depends on the specific process or path taken to reach a state, rather than the state itself. Its differential is inexact (denoted by δ). Work and Heat are classic examples.
For instance, if a gas expands from state 1 to state 2, the work done (area under the P-v curve) varies significantly depending on whether the process is isothermal, adiabatic, or isobaric, even though the initial and final states are identical.
