Answer PaperPaper Code: 114ATMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

PART- A

125 marks
a

Define Uniform flow and non-uniform flow.

2 marks

Answer

Uniform flow is a flow in which the velocity at any given time does not change with respect to space (distance) along the direction of flow. Non-uniform flow is a flow in which the velocity changes from point to point along the stream line at any given instant.

b

Define the equation of continuity.

3 marks

Answer

The equation of continuity is based on the principle of conservation of mass. It states that for a steady, one-dimensional flow of an incompressible fluid, the mass flow rate remains constant across any cross-section of a conduit. Mathematically, it is expressed as:

A₁v₁ = A₂v₂

where A is the cross-sectional area and v is the average velocity at the respective sections.

c

Find the discharge of water flowing through a pipe 30 cm diameter placed in an inclined position where a venturimeter is inserted, having a throat diameter of 15 cm. The difference of pressure between the main and throat is measured by a liquid of sp. Gr. 0.6 in an inverted U- tube which gives a reading of 30 cm. The loss of head between the main and throat is 0.2 times the kinetic head of the pipe.
