Answer PaperPaper Code: 124DDMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit.

Part A

1.a

If

a = a_1 i + a_2 j + a_3 k
and
r = xi + yj + zk
, then find
∇(r.a)
.

2 marks

Answer

Given the vectors

a = a_1 i + a_2 j + a_3 k
and
r = xi + yj + zk
, their dot product is
r ⋅ a = a_1 x + a_2 y + a_3 z
. The gradient operator is defined as
∇ = i(∂/∂x) + j(∂/∂y) + k(∂/∂z)
. Applying the gradient to the scalar product, we get
∇(r ⋅ a) = i(∂/∂x)(a_1 x + a_2 y + a_3 z) + j(∂/∂y)(a_1 x + a_2 y + a_3 z) + k(∂/∂z)(a_1 x + a_2 y + a_3 z)
. Calculating the partial derivatives yields
∇(r ⋅ a) = a_1 i + a_2 j + a_3 k = a
.

1.b

State Divergence theorem.

3 marks

Answer

The Divergence Theorem, also known as Gauss's Theorem, states that the outward flux of a vector field F across a closed surface S is equal to the triple integral of the divergence of F over the volume V enclosed by that surface.

∬S F · n dS = ∭V (∇ · F) dV

In this expression, F is a continuously differentiable vector field, S is a closed surface enclosing a volume V, and n is the outward-pointing unit normal vector to the surface S.
